I’ve been wanting a pair of Adida shoes for a while now. I had a pair that where my gym shoes for school when I was 13, but after having my mom look for them all over the house, without any luck, I decided to buy a new pair. The Stan Smith ones with the green back have been trending for a while now (even my dad has them), but I wanted a different kind: the ones with the black stripes. After buying them I realized that everyone had these as well, but I don’t mind. I love my new shoes.
When I opened up the box where the shoes came in, there was a carboard that said something like: I’m not in it for the attention, the likes, the views. I am not in it for the applause. I am not in it for anyone else… Which made me think, not just about the blog and social media, but about life in general and what we go through daily.
I have found myself deleting a picture that I posted on Instagram or Facebook because it didn’t get enough likes – or the amount of likes that I wanted – even if I loved the picture; and then I get mad at myself from doing it for that reason. I started this blog as a hobby, to share my outfits and beauty tips with you guys; and I post on Instagram to share images that I like, even if they’re as basic as what I ate that day (lol). But sometimes we can’t help but to pay attention to other people’s validation of what we post and we stop being unique.
But it doesn’t end there, this doesn’t only happen «online,» it also happens «in real life.» Other people’s validation sometimes matters so much to us that we change how we are, our personality, in order to adapt it to how other people want us to be, or how other people expect us to act, and we do things or act in such a way that we later regret because it doesn’t portray the real us.
I heard something the other day that made me think about all this, «Never be in a place where your character can’t sustain you,» which I interpreted as, never try to be who you are not and if you are in a situation where you feel that you have to change who you are in order to fit in, then get out of that situation. If it’s not possible to get out of it, just understand that you don’t have to change to feel accepted by others. If the people there don’t accept you as you are then it’s their problem, not yours, and there are people who love you as you are. Be original, be you – «on line» and «in real life»- I asure you that you will feel much better.
«To be yourself in a world that is constante trying
to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.»
-Ralph Waldo Emerson.
